International Conference on Language Variation in Europe

The International Conference on Language Variation in Europe, ICLaVE, is one of the most important fora for research in the area of language variation in Europe. It aims at bringing together scholars of languages and language varieties spoken in Europe with the purpose of discussing empirical, methodological and theoretical issues in the study of language variation and change on the continent.

Once and Future English

This conference begins with the notion that English is today used by about 1.5 billion people, less than a third of whom speak it as their first language. This minority-majority reversal has significantly impacted the grammatical characteristics of English, the demographics of the Anglophone population, the domains in which English is used, and attitudes towards the language, which has been described both as a venue for increased global communication and as a cultural and economic predator.

ESPSIG: 'Empathy, Not Sympathy: Preparing for OET Speaking and beyond'

An ability to demonstrate effective relationship building skills, especially empathy is essential not only to success in OET Speaking, but also to working in the healthcare environment. The presenter will first consider the nature of empathy and its positive impacts on patient care before providing ways to help develop this skill in English. A clinical communications model for demonstrating empathy will be presented, with focus given to both verbal and non-verbal expression, while typical role-plays from OET Speaking provide the backdrop.
